Many things help determine the value of a piece of jewelry.  Additionally know that jewelry has different value to everyone for different reasons.  Here we will try to summarize some of the factors that go into valuing a piece of jewelry

• Materials:  one of the key factors in determining the value of piece of jewelry are the materials it is made from.  The metal, the stones, and any other materials that go into the construction of a piece always have a major role in determining the value of a piece.  Metals; for example if its gold or platinum will make a difference in value as well as the purity of each metal along with the weight!  Stones whether they are natural or synthetic, what their origin is, what their quality it, what the size is and so many more factors play into the actual physical material.  Most jewelers, pawn shops, gold buyers, and buyers generally rely on these factors to determine the value.  Some buyers will factor in many many other reasons into their evaluations
• Labor:  Other buyers will consider things like labor into their evaluation.  As an example if you would like to purchase a custom piece of jewelry versus something off the shelf labor is a big factor here and CAN greatly influence the price.  So many times when we evaluate a piece for sale we factor labor into the equation (but not always every single piece is different!)
• Design:  Design is an important value adder.   Certain designs carry premium prices even if they are of the same style.  There are many designs that look similar however the devil is in the details!
• Style:  You may have a combination of wonderful gems, outstanding design, incredible amounts of labor yet the overall style of the piece just isn't "in".  This can effect the value.  Sometimes a piece can be greatly valued for its style even if its not popular today.  Every piece is different and we use all of these factors as well as many more to determine value when we are purchasing a piece
• Craftsmanship:  You may check the boxes on the above items and yet the piece just is not made well.  The other side is maybe its phenomenal! Maybe its cracked, maybe its full of porosity, maybe its faulty, maybe its just not done correctly, OR maybe its finished outstandingly with craftsmanship unmatched.  This can effect the value greatly.  
• Maker:  Along with craftsmanship (but not always) is the maker of piece.  For example you may have steel watch (very inexpensive metal) with lots of labor, fine craftsmanship. classic style and its dated 1960 and it just happens to be a vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona.  That would be of significantly more value then a similar watch of the same materials made by other manufacturers.  Even the smallest and slightest variations on many watches like vintage Rolex have an amazingly different price threshold.  Often times those who do not rely on a professional and sell to a local shop or just list them online are missing HUGE potentials in profit.
• Condition:  You may have all of the other boxes checked and the piece is just destroyed.  An outstanding piece in unworn, or close to condition can greatly effect the price.  Take a filigree ring thats perfect versus one where the filigree is nearly destroyed.  Or even the vintage rolex example above.  Maybe you have this beautiful vintage Rolex and you google a price of it and see a similar watch that has been relumed.  The price of that watch you see could be 1/10th of the value of your watch!
• Original, box, papers, receipts, paperwork:  Sometimes with a piece of jewelry, watch, gemstone, or diamond having the original paperwork is important.  Often times things like the original box, original receipt can be valuable to buyers.  Personally I collect items with original receipts, sketches of the original piece, watches with box and papers, even photographs and paintings of the piece can add value
• Provenance:  Provenance can be an amazing influencer of value.  Was the piece passed down from royalty or does it have an amazing story with it.  Who, and where did it come from.  We are always interested in important historical pieces and I personally collect them!
• Preference:  Personal preference is an important factor in determining value. Always expect a buyer to pay more for something they like.
• Market: Another important factor in determining value is the actual market.  Sometimes a piece, a style, a designer etc is extremely popular and the prices inflate sometimes the market shows inflated prices when the market is not commanding those prices. 
  
• Connection: Everyone has a different market for different things.  Because our market is an international market with collectors as friends, as well as strong relationships with clients around the globe we often pay much more for items as placement of items can be important.  A piece may check off all of the boxes and go to a buyer who just does not have a place to go with it.  Having an international clientele with vast personal relationships of all types of collectors we are confident in valuations of all types of jewelry, gemstones, watches, and valuables.
