Labratory Grown Diamonds
At Velvet Box Society we do offer lab grown diamonds. However our core belief is in natural. First lets talk about the facts and differences and we can move into our core beliefs at the Velvet Box Society.
Lab-grown diamonds are in fact synthetic diamonds. This means they are manufactured diamonds or man-made diamonds that are created in a laboratory using special equipment and chemicals. They are, in fact, diamonds just not created by a geological process. This means they are not chemically or physically different from natural diamonds.
For many hundreds of years scientists have been attempting to create diamonds and finally in the 1940s systematic research began in the United States, Sweden, and the Soviet Union which culminated in the first reproducible synthesis of diamond in 1954. Two methods were discovered HPHT (high-pressure high-temperature) and CVD (chemical Vapor Disposition. These two methods dominate the lab grown diamond market today. A third method, known as detonation synthesis, entered the diamond market in the late 1990s. In this process, the detonation of carbon-containing explosives creates nanometer-sized diamond grains. Scientists have also demonstrated a fourth method of diamond synthesis, treating graphite with high-power ultrasound, but this process currently has no commercial application. So HPHT and CVD remain the processes in place today. If you are searching for a lab grown diamond today it was made using HPHT or CVD process thought most CVD stones are also HPHT treated as well to improve their colors.
The good thing about lab grown diamonds is their cost savings. If you are looking for a bigger and slightly higher quality stone for a less expensive price a lab grown diamond is the way to go. There is no question about it you can purchase a man made diamond of a bigger size and better quality for less than the equivalent of a natural diamond. Many of our clients like that.
At Velvet Box Society we believe in natural. Though we will sell a lab grown diamond by special request we recommend to our clients to consider the benefits of going with a natural diamond. Natural diamond prices are stable. A natural diamond price his a historical trackable price and price predictions for the future. Lab grown diamonds also have a trackable price. However we see the fall in prices from the inception of the lab grown market. Meaning five years ago a lab grown diamond may have sold for $5000. Today the same stone likely sells for $1500. The future production tells us that the same stone will likely sell for $200. So though you can purchase a larger better quality stone today for less than natural its likely the value of that stone will plummet as production prices become less.
