Henry Kohn & Sons
Henry Kohn was born in Bohemia, Austria in 1839 and moved to the United States at 26 years old in 1865. After settling in Hartford, CT he started his jewelry business. His business moved to Maryland but ultimately he moved back and settled in Hartford in 1875. The company started by focusing on diamond and gem wholesale and between Hartford and Rockville, MD his business grew greatly. In 1892 his sons Oscar and Albert joined his business and became partners changing the name to Henry Kohn and Sons before Edmund and George, his other sons, joined the business. With the four sons joining the business setting up a location in New York city at 13 Maiden Lane in 1898 made sense. The business grew and in 1904, a factory was built in Newark, NJ where Oscar and Edmund located their offices and wholesale side of the business. Albert and George ran the retail location in Hartford with their father who remained active until he passed in 1917. The four sons continued to run both aspects of the business until the business was sold to G. Fox, and company another retail shop in Hartford.
