Burle Marx
Roberto and Haroldo Burle Marx were brothers whos different skills accelerated their brand. Rich cultural Brazilian tradition is what brought their brand into the light. Their work captured the attention of jewelers, dealers, the public, and even the Brazilian government which commissioned them to make jewelry pieces for visiting dignitaries. Amoung these the Queen of England, the former Empress of Iran, Pope John Paul II, Princess Michiko Shoda of Japan, Indira Gandhi and many other political figures. The Burle Marx brothers were from a well to do family of German Jewish decent distantly related to Karl Marx, who emigrated to Rio in 1895. Roberto, Haroldo and their brother Walter all excelled in creative fields. A designer, lapidary, and gemologist, Haroldo ran a successful workshop in Rio from the 1930s through the 1980s. Then in 1982 Haroldo began a partnership with Alta Leath, wife of Texas Congressman, the late Marvin Leath. This partnership in the United States was a first for Burle Marx. The partnership lasted almost another decade until his death in 1991.
