Mario Buccellati (1891-1965) came home from the war in 1918 to go back to work for Beltrami e Besnati however the company had been sold and no longer needed is services. Mario had been apprenticed as a goldsmith there prior to the war. Buccellati opened a shop in 1919 in the city center on Largo Santa Margherita. Mario supplied Milan's high society with amazing jewelry. In 1921 he exhibited his jewelry in Madrid at the palazzo di casa Errayz y Comp. There he met and earned the business of the Spanish Royal family. Then in 1925 he openned a second boutique in Rome’s Via Condotti. Then a third in Florence. As the 1940’s succeeded in to the 50’s Buccellati pushed to expand internationally. First New York which his son Luca opened on 51st street in 1951. Three years later they opened another on Fifth Avenue followed in 1958 by a seasonal location on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach growing rapidly. Gianmaria, Buccellati's other son started working with his father when he was 14 years old, learning both the business and the goldsmiths craft. Mario passed away in 1965, and Gianmaria took over the management of the workshops and the creative side of the business. His brother Luca, focused on developing the business in the United States and his other brothers Lorenzo and Frederico ran the existing shops in Italy. Over time various disputes eventually led to Gianmaria breaking away and establishing Gianmaria Buccellati boutiques in Hong Kong in 1970, the Middle East, and the rest of Europe. In 1979 the brand became the first Italian jeweler to open in the Place Vendôme in Paris. In 1973 Gianmaria, with colleagues, opened the Italian Gemological Institute which he remained president of for twenty five years. Andrea, his son joined him in 1978 and they worked together to continue the worldwide expansion of the business. In 2000 the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History hosted an exhibition ‘Buccellati: Art in Gold, Silver and Gems’.
In 2011 the Mario Buccellati and Gianmaria Buccellati brands were finally unified under the single name of Buccellati and in 2013 they secured a deal with the Italian equity fund Clessidra to sell the majority stake of the company. Andrea became President.
